Sake cups made of wood were traditionally used in Japan on various ceremonies, parties and other important occassions.
These masu were formerly the measuring cups for sake and therefore they were also generally used as sake cups as well.
Nowadays sake cups are made of various materials other than wood: ceramics, glass, lacquer, plactic and even metal.
Although masu is the most traditional Japanese sake cup of all, there are many other forms of sake cups as well:
-ochoko
-sakazuki
-guinomi
-shotglass(always used with masu in Japan)
-wineglass(preferred for sake tasting occassions)
